A shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported early morning near Jijel, Algeria.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Monday, December 6th, 2021, at 3:19 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Rouached (pop. 40,300) located 21 km from the epicenter, BABOR - VILLE (pop. 33,000) 26 km away, Jijel (pop. 148,000) 33 km away, and Sidi Mérouane (pop. 25,100) 39 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include El Eulma (pop. 128,400) located 44 km from the epicenter, Chateaudun (pop. 71,700) 51 km away, Telerghma (pop. 51,700) 66 km away, Hamma Bouziane (pop. 63,000) 70 km away, and Constantine (pop. 450,100) 73 km away.
