Moderate 4.1 quake hits near Ventura, Ventura County, California, USA
4.1 quake 26 Feb 5:44 pm (GMT -8)
4.1 quake 26 Feb 5:44 pm (GMT -8)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred in the afternoon on Saturday, February 26th, 2022, at 5:44 pm local time near Ventura, Ventura County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 16 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Santa Paula (pop. 30,500) located 6 miles from the epicenter, Fillmore (pop. 15,500) 12 miles away, Ventura (pop. 96,800) 13 miles away, Camarillo (pop. 67,600) 15 miles away, Oxnard (pop. 207,300) 15 miles away, and Moorpark (pop. 36,100) 17 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Simi Valley (pop. 126,800) located 22 miles from the epicenter, Thousand Oaks (pop. 129,300) 24 miles away, and Valencia (pop. 148,500) 30 miles away.
