Moderate 4.2 quake hits near Salinas, Monterey County, California, USA

4.2 quake 13 Mar 1:51 pm (GMT -7)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred around noon on Sunday, March 13th, 2022, at 1:51 pm local time near Salinas, Monterey County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.9 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Soledad (pop. 25,000) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Greenfield (pop. 17,200) 19 miles away, Hollister (pop. 37,500) 22 miles away, and Salinas (pop. 157,400) 27 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Prunedale (pop. 17,600) located 30 miles from the epicenter, Gilroy (pop. 53,200) 36 miles away, Seaside (pop. 33,000) 37 miles away, Los Banos (pop. 37,500) 38 miles away, and Watsonville (pop. 53,600) 39 miles away.

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
