Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes near Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia

5.2 quake 16 Mar 9:59 am (GMT +7)
5.2 quake 16 Mar 9:59 am (GMT +7)
A shallow magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported in the morning near Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Wednesday, March 16th, 2022, at 9:59 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Banjar (pop. 37,300) located 79 km from the epicenter, Sukabumi (pop. 276,400) 94 km away, Soreang (pop. 150,900) 99 km away, Pelabuhanratu (pop. 43,000) 99 km away, Banjaran (pop. 165,000) 103 km away, Paseh (pop. 126,200) 112 km away, Bandung (pop. 1,699,700) 115 km away, Padalarang (pop. 124,900) 115 km away, and Cimahi (pop. 493,700) 115 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
