An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred only 15 minutes ago 66 km east of Hakha, Myanmar (Burma), the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 72 km beneath the epicenter near Hakha, Chin State, Myanmar (Burma), in the evening on Sunday, May 1st, 2022, at 9:15 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Palan (pop. 5,400) located 65 km from the epicenter, Hakha (pop. 20,000) 66 km away, Mawlaik (pop. 44,500) 109 km away, and Monywa (pop. 182,000) 110 km away.
