An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 occurred only 6 minutes ago 17 miles southeast of Ridgecrest, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Ridgecrest, Kern County, California, USA, late at night on Monday, May 9th, 2022, at 11:53 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.5 as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.6.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Searles Valley (pop. 1,700) located 17 miles from the epicenter, Ridgecrest (pop. 28,800) 17 miles away, China Lake Acres (pop. 1,900) 23 miles away, and Inyokern (pop. 1,100) 25 miles away. In California City (pop. 13,300, 43 miles away), Barstow (pop. 23,700, 48 miles away), Barstow Heights (pop. 24,200, 49 miles away), and Barstow Heights (pop. 24,200, 49 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
