An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred in the morning on Wednesday, May 18th, 2022, at 11:46 am local time near Faizabad, Faīẕābād, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 80 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Ashkāsham (pop. 12,100) located 28 km from the epicenter, Ishqoshim (pop. 26,000) 33 km away, Jurm (pop. 12,100) 38 km away, and Faizabad (pop. 44,400) 69 km away.
