Just 11 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Kailua-Kona, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA. The tremor was recorded late at night on Saturday, May 21st, 2022, at 11:49 pm local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.8 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5 as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Holualoa (pop. 8,500) located 1 miles from the epicenter, Kailua-Kona (pop. 12,000) 2 miles away, Honalo (pop. 2,400) 6 miles away, Kalaoa (pop. 9,600) 7 miles away, Kealakekua (pop. 2,000) 8 miles away, and Captain Cook (pop. 3,400) 10 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
