Significant magnitude 5.3 quake hits 50 km northwest of Santo Domingo Tehuantepec, Mexico in the afternoon
5.3 quake 25 May 4:43 pm (GMT -5)
5.3 quake 25 May 4:43 pm (GMT -5)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred in the afternoon on Wednesday, May 25th, 2022, at 4:43 pm local time near Santo Domingo Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.3.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Santiago Lachiguiri (pop. 1,700) located 11 km from the epicenter.
In Jalapa (pop. 8,300) located 19 km from the epicenter, Santa Maria Jalapa del Marqués (pop. 9,000) 25 km away, Santo Domingo Tehuantepec (pop. 42,100) 50 km away, and Ixtepec (pop. 25,400) 53 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Juchitan de Zaragoza (pop. 74,800) located 65 km from the epicenter, Salina Cruz (pop. 76,600) 65 km away, Matias Romero Avendaño (pop. 18,900) 67 km away, and Oaxaca (pop. 255,000) 130 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

Data for the same earthquake reported by different agencies

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
