A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Santiago de los Caballeros de Merida, Municipio Libertador, Mérida, Venezuela, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 49.9 km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Wednesday, June 8th, 2022, at 12:39 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Santiago de los Caballeros de Merida (pop. 300,000) located 8 km from the epicenter, Ejido (pop. 106,900) 19 km away, Mucumpiz (pop. 215,300) 23 km away, Lagunillas (pop. 28,200) 35 km away, La Azulita (pop. 17,100) 40 km away, Tucani (pop. 24,000) 44 km away, and El Vigia (pop. 59,100) 62 km away.
