A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, Mexico, was reported only 29 minutes ago by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Mexico. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 16 km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Monday, June 27th, 2022, at 8:19 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Francisco del Mar Viejo (pop. 4,000) located 92 km from the epicenter, San Mateo del Mar (pop. 5,700) 95 km away, Colonia Juarez (pop. 2,800) 96 km away, and Salina Cruz (pop. 76,600) 101 km away.
