Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 8 km west of Naranjal, Ecuador in the morning

4.7 quake 29 Jun 8:53 am (GMT -5)
4.7 quake 29 Jun 8:53 am (GMT -5)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred only 25 minutes ago 8 km west of Naranjal, Ecuador, the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 8 km beneath the epicenter near Naranjal, Cantón Naranjal, Provincia del Guayas, Ecuador, in the morning on Wednesday, June 29th, 2022, at 8:53 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Naranjal (pop. 32,000) located 8 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Troncal (pop. 36,400) located 48 km from the epicenter, Guayaquil (pop. 1,952,000) 58 km away, Duran (pop. 167,800) 59 km away, San Francisco de Milagro (pop. 133,500) 62 km away, Naranjito (pop. 34,200) 62 km away, Yaguachi Nuevo (pop. 27,900) 65 km away, Villamil (pop. 30,600) 78 km away, and Cuenca (pop. 277,000) 80 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
