Just 8 minutes ago, a 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Big Pine, Inyo County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded late at night on Thursday, June 30th, 2022, at 10:27 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 7.4 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 3.5 earthquake as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Big Pine (pop. 1,800) located 3 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Dixon Lane-Meadow Creek (pop. 2,600) located 16 miles from the epicenter, and West Bishop (pop. 2,600) 16 miles away. In Mammoth Lakes (pop. 7,900, 50 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
