3.0 quake 20 km east of Sion, Valais, Switzerland, Jul 4, 2022 8:58 am (GMT +2)
A very shallow magnitude 3.0 earthquake was reported in the morning near Sion, Sion District, Valais, Switzerland.
According to the Swiss Seismological Service (SED), the quake hit on Monday, July 4th, 2022, at 8:58 am local time at a very shallow depth of 2 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Chandolin (pop. 79) located 2 km from the epicenter, and Chippis (pop. 1,600) 8 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Leuk (pop. 3,400) located 9 km from the epicenter, Sierre (pop. 15,800) 9 km away, Chalais (pop. 2,700) 9 km away, Randogne (pop. 3,200) 12 km away, Lens (pop. 3,500) 14 km away, Sion (pop. 28,000) 20 km away, and Visp (pop. 6,600) 21 km away.
