5.6 quake 4 Jul 1:17 am (GMT -8)
The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.6 quake in the United States near Saint George, Aleutians West, Alaska, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Monday, July 4th, 2022, at 1:17 am local time at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.6, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Saint George (pop. 100) located 16 miles from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Saint Paul (pop. 480) located 56 miles from the epicenter.
