Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes near Kawalu, West Java, Indonesia

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 4.9 quake in Indonesia near Kawalu, West Java, 37 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Saturday, July 16th, 2022, at 10:05 pm local time at a shallow depth of 28 km. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Singaparna (pop. 48,900) located 94 km from the epicenter, Kawalu (pop. 50,500) 94 km away, and Tasikmalaya (pop. 271,100) 101 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ciamis (pop. 123,600) located 107 km from the epicenter, and Paseh (pop. 126,200) 120 km away.
