A magnitude 4.7 earthquake near Mollendo, Provincia de Islay, Arequipa, Peru, was reported only 10 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 72 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Thursday, July 28th, 2022, at 2:34 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Quilca (pop. 210) located 23 km from the epicenter, Mollendo (pop. 29,000) 39 km away, and El Pedregal (pop. 20,100) 41 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Camana (pop. 16,400) located 54 km from the epicenter, Jacobo Hunter (pop. 46,100) 78 km away, Ciudad Satelite (pop. 76,400) 81 km away, Cono Norte (pop. 47,300) 82 km away, Arequipa (pop. 841,100) 82 km away, and Selva Alegre (pop. 72,700) 84 km away.
