Moderate magnitude 4.4 earthquake 43 km south of Shizuoka, Japan

4.4 quake 29 Jul 11:41 pm (GMT +9)
4.4 quake 29 Jul 11:41 pm (GMT +9)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred late at night on Friday, July 29th, 2022, at 11:41 pm local time near Shizuoka, Shizuoka-shi, Prefectura de Shizuoka, Japan, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate to considerable depth of 230 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Ōyama (pop. 21,700, 17 km away), Sagara (pop. 25,900, 20 km away), Yaizu (pop. 121,100, 31 km away), Shimada (pop. 75,800, 31 km away), Fujieda (pop. 132,900, 32 km away), Kakegawa (pop. 84,000, 40 km away), Shizuoka (pop. 701,600, 43 km away), and Fukuroi (pop. 63,000, 47 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
