5.0 quake 17 km east of Nara, Japan, Aug 6, 2022 11:52 pm (GMT +9)
Just 10 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Nara, Nara-shi, Japan. The tremor was recorded late at night on Saturday, August 6th, 2022, at 11:52 pm local time, at a great depth of 368 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Ueno-ebisumachi (pop. 61,600, 14 km away), Nabari (pop. 88,100, 17 km away), Nara (pop. 367,400, 17 km away), Tenri (pop. 71,100, 22 km away), Uji (pop. 192,900, 23 km away), Ikoma (pop. 117,600, 26 km away), Sakurai (pop. 63,000, 29 km away), Kashihara-shi (pop. 124,500, 31 km away), and Osaka (pop. 2,592,400, 44 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
