4.4 quake 13 Aug 3:10 am (GMT -4)
The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Venezuela near El Vigia, Municipio Alberto Adriani, Mérida, only 29 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Saturday, August 13th, 2022, at 3:10 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.4.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In La Azulita (pop. 17,100) located 13 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in El Vigia (pop. 59,100) located 15 km from the epicenter, Lagunillas (pop. 28,200) 21 km away, Santa Cruz de Mora (pop. 21,200) 29 km away, Ejido (pop. 106,900) 33 km away, Santiago de los Caballeros de Merida (pop. 300,000) 41 km away, Tovar (pop. 40,700) 42 km away, and Mucumpiz (pop. 215,300) 49 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
