Moderate magnitude 4.7 quake hits 109 km southwest of Pagar Alam, Indonesia around noon

A shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported around noon near Pagar Alam, Lahat Regency, South Sumatra, Indonesia.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Wednesday, August 17th, 2022, at 12:38 pm local time at a shallow depth of 27 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pagar Alam (pop. 70,400) located 109 km from the epicenter.
