An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred only 11 minutes ago 94 km east of Iquique, Chile, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 80 km beneath the epicenter near Iquique, Provincia de Iquique, Tarapaca, Chile, in the morning on Saturday, September 17th, 2022, at 10:42 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Tarapaca (pop. 120) located 39 km from the epicenter, Huara (pop. 1,100) 58 km away, Alto Hospicio (pop. 105,100) 90 km away, and Iquique (pop. 227,500) 94 km away.

Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake ruptured along a surface of approx. 13 km² (=5 sqare miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 6 km (4 mi).
