Magnitude 3.8 earthquake strikes near Paternò, Catania, Sicily, Italy

3.8 quake 22 Sep 4:21 am (GMT +2)
3.8 quake 22 Sep 4:21 am (GMT +2)
A magnitude 3.8 earthquake near Paternò, Catania, Sicily, Italy, was reported only 27 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Thursday, September 22nd, 2022, at 4:21 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.7. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Giaconia (pop. 390) located 1 km from the epicenter, and Paternò (pop. 46,000) 1 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Belpasso (pop. 16,300) located 7 km from the epicenter, Misterbianco (pop. 45,500) 10 km away, Biancavilla (pop. 23,200) 10 km away, Mascalucia (pop. 29,900) 12 km away, Adrano (pop. 34,400) 13 km away, and Catania (pop. 290,900) 16 km away.
