Just 28 minutes ago, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Yakutat, Yakutat City and, Alaska, USA. The tremor was recorded early afternoon on Thursday, September 29th, 2022, at 3:08 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the Department of Natural Resources Canada (NRCAN), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.2, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.5, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Yakutat (pop. 660) located 70 miles from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
