Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 just reported 97 km west of Subic, Philippines

4.8 quake 23 May 12:41 pm (GMT +8)
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Sunday 23 May 2021 at 12:41 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Nicolas (pop. 2,800) located 83 km from the epicenter, San Antonio (pop. 34,200) 84 km away, San Narciso (pop. 15,600) 85 km away, San Marcelino (pop. 18,700) 92 km away, Iba (pop. 26,900) 95 km away, and Castillejos (pop. 27,300) 95 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Botolan (pop. 23,000) located 96 km from the epicenter, and Subic (pop. 67,700) 97 km away.
