The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 33 km beneath the epicenter near San Nicolas, Zambales, Central Luzon, Philippines, after midnight on Monday 24 May 2021 at 12:41 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Nicolas (pop. 2,800) located 102 km from the epicenter, and Subic (pop. 67,700) 117 km away.
