A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Managua, Departamento de Managua, Nicaragua, was reported only 13 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 58 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Sunday 23 May 2021 at 4:37 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Masachapa (pop. 5,000) located 30 km from the epicenter, San Rafael del Sur (pop. 29,800) 40 km away, Diriamba (pop. 35,000) 58 km away, San Marcos (pop. 23,300) 65 km away, Ciudad Sandino (pop. 50,000) 74 km away, Managua (pop. 973,100) 78 km away, and Granada (pop. 89,400) 89 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tipitapa (pop. 50,000) located 94 km from the epicenter, Leon (pop. 144,500) 96 km away, and Nicaragua (pop. 30,000) 97 km away.
