Significant magnitude 5.4 quake hits 88 km southeast of Sendai, Japan in the morning

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake near Sendai, Sendai Shi, Miyagi, Japan, was reported only 11 minutes ago by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 74.3 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Tuesday 8 June 2021 at 10:19 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Namie (pop. 21,900) located 68 km from the epicenter, Ishinomaki (pop. 117,200) 77 km away, Watari (pop. 36,300) 77 km away, Iwanuma (pop. 42,400) 79 km away, Shiogama (pop. 59,500) 81 km away, Yamoto (pop. 32,000) 81 km away, Kakuda (pop. 33,200) 82 km away, and Sendai (pop. 1,063,100) 88 km away.
