Moderate 4.7 quake hits near Cao Bằng, Tỉnh Cao Bằng, Vietnam

A shallow magnitude 4.7 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Cao Bằng, Tỉnh Cao Bằng, Vietnam.
According to Thailand's Earthquake Observation Division (TMD), the quake hit on Saturday, September 11th, 2021, at 2:05 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Cao Bằng (pop. 41,100) located 33 km from the epicenter, and Lang Son (pop. 56,000) 72 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Thai Nguyên (pop. 133,900) located 102 km from the epicenter.
