An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred in the morning on Saturday, September 11th, 2021, at 8:07 am local time near Junction City, Geary County, Kansas, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.1 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Weak shaking might have been felt in Hope (pop. 340) located 5 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Herington (pop. 2,400) located 7 miles from the epicenter, and Abilene (pop. 6,600) 15 miles away. In Junction City (pop. 24,600, 22 miles away), Salina (pop. 47,800, 32 miles away), and Manhattan (pop. 56,300, 38 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
