An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 24 minutes ago 54 km southeast of Gerāsh, Iran, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Gerāsh, Gerash, Fars, Iran, early morning on Sunday, September 12th, 2021, at 2:45 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gerāsh (pop. 25,300) located 54 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bandar-e Lengeh (pop. 22,800) located 95 km from the epicenter.
