Moderate 4.6 quake hits near San Jose, San José, Provincia de San José, Costa Rica

A shallow magnitude 4.6 earthquake was reported early evening near San Jose, San José, Provincia de San José, Costa Rica.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Saturday, September 11th, 2021, at 7:20 pm local time at a shallow depth of 18 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Jaco (pop. 4,100) located 22 km from the epicenter, Tejar (pop. 22,400) 61 km away, San Rafael Abajo (pop. 27,400) 63 km away, and Chacarita (pop. 26,400) 64 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Alajuela (pop. 47,500) located 84 km from the epicenter, San Jose (pop. 335,000) 87 km away, San Francisco (pop. 55,900) 88 km away, Heredia (pop. 21,900) 90 km away, and Cartago (pop. 26,600) 97 km away.
