The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 2.8 quake in the Netherlands near Groningen, only 18 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Saturday, September 24th, 2022, at 12:20 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 3 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 2.8 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Uithuizermeeden (pop. 2,800) located 2 km from the epicenter, and Uithuizen (pop. 4,900) 2 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bedum (pop. 7,800) located 14 km from the epicenter, Appingedam (pop. 12,400) 14 km away, and Delfzijl (pop. 28,600) 17 km away. In Groningen (pop. 181,200, 23 km away), Hoogezand (pop. 21,500, 28 km away), Veendam (pop. 28,200, 36 km away), and Winschoten (pop. 18,500, 37 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
