Significant magnitude 5.3 quake hits 103 km east of Santo, Vanuatu after midnight

A magnitude 5.3 earthquake near Santo, Luganville, Sanma Province, Vanuatu, was reported only 17 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 15 km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Tuesday, September 27th, 2022, at 12:58 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Santo (pop. 13,400) located 103 km from the epicenter, Norsup (pop. 3,000) 106 km away, Lakatoro (pop. 710) 108 km away, and Port-Olry (pop. 2,000) 120 km away.
