Papua New Guinea was shaken near Arawa, Bougainville, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 27 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 64.3 km beneath the epicenter near Arawa, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, in the morning on Tuesday, September 27th, 2022, at 8:11 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.1 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) at magnitude 5.1, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Panguna (pop. 2,900) located 111 km from the epicenter, and Arawa (pop. 40,300) 122 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
If you felt it, report it through our site or app right now!
