The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in Peru near Abancay, Provincia de Abancay, Region de Apurimac, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Wednesday, September 28th, 2022, at 3:03 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.

Moderate shaking probably occurred in Capaya (pop. 280) located 5 km from the epicenter.
In Sañayca (pop. 550) located 8 km from the epicenter, Colcabamba (pop. 530) 18 km away, and Pampachiri (pop. 690) 21 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Andahuaylas (pop. 17,400) located 53 km from the epicenter, San Geronimo (pop. 5,600) 53 km away, Talavera (pop. 7,400) 54 km away, Abancay (pop. 55,100) 76 km away, and Tambo (pop. 5,000) 96 km away.
