Short time-lapse of the violent paroxysm of Etna volcano's Voragine summit crater during the early hours of 3 Dec 2015: intense strombolian activity rapidly increased into violent lava fountains, reaching more than 1 km in height and projecting incandescent bombs to more than 3 km above the summit. The peak phase occurs between 02:20 - 03:20 (UTC, local time = +1 hour). Etna eruption update: http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/etna/current-activity.html

Etna volcano: opening of new eruptive fissure and lava flow 5-7 July 2014

Time-lapse video of Etna volcano seen through INGV's thermal webcam facing the east side of the volcano. Starting from 12:00 UTC, a dike starts to arrive at the surface, where a new fissure opens up under the eastern base of the NE crater and starts to feed a small lava flow that has been traveling into the Valle del Leone. Speed is approx. 1 hour per second. Eruption updates: http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/etna/current-activity.html More at http://webcams.volcanodiscovery.com

Etna volcano pyroclastic flow 11 Feb morning

Time-lapse video of the pyroclastic flow that descended on Etna's eastern flank from the area of the new vents that opened yesterday. Most likely, explosive lava-snow interaction and destabilization of an area where magma was pushing its way outside caused a sector to collapse and descend the Valle del Bove flank as a hot avalanche (pyroclastic flow) for about 3 km. Etna volcano: lava flows from vents on the eastern side of the New SE crater

The video is a time-lapse of INGV's thermal webcam on Monte Cagliato with a direct view onto the east side of the New SE crater and the lava flows from the effusive vents at its lower base as well from the new vent that opened yesterday (10 Feb) half way on its flank between the summit and the previous effusive vents. Several surges of lava (and phases of strombolian activity at the summit) can be seen: - The first, slowly advancing lava flow starting on 3 Feb, reaching the base of the Valle del Bove wall by the evening of 5 Feb, and stagnating by 6 Feb evening. - Several smaller lava flows appears between 6-7 Feb, following the same path as the previous flow, but not reaching more than half way down the slope. - Effusion of lava decreases during the afternoon and evening of 7 Feb. - A new flow starts around midnight 7-8 Feb and forms 2 branches on the upper slope that cool during the afternoon of 8 Feb. Another surge appears after 17:00 and advances in 2, later 3 well-alimented branches almost to the bottom of the slope by noon of 9 Feb. During the afternoon of 9 Feb, most lava is fed into the two northern branches which continue to advance and form a delta with several tongues. - In the late evening of 9 Feb and during the first hours of 10 Feb, strombolian activity at the summit vent becomes relatively intense and near continuous. - A new surge of lava appears around 07:00 on 10 Feb. During the day, these flows decrease and start to cool, with fresh lava only visible in the upper area near the vent. - The opening of the new vent around 10 am is not well visible due to cloud cover, but in the evening and during the night 10-11 Feb, 2 new vents below the summit can be identified. - Another new vent opens up around 04:00 this morning, erupting a new short-lived lava flow that stops being active around 09:00. - Since then, lava effuses from yesterday's vents on the middle flank. Etna volcano - the opening of the fissure and lava flow at the SE base of the NSEC (15 Dec 2013)

Time-lapse video of Etna volcano's New SE crater during the early hours of 15 Dec. Before 06:00, the summit (and to its left, the western vent in the saddle) are active with violent strombolian explosions and magma bubbles, and a small lava flow effuses from the summit vent to the SE as a result of overflow. At 06:10, a strong explosion occurs and a fissure opens below the summit vent at on the SE side, producing a new flood of lava in the same path as the previous flow (the fracture on the SE side). This fissure vent propagated further down towards the base of the cone and has continued to produce lava flows until now. More at http://webcams.volcanodiscovery.com

Etna volcano New SE crater paroxysm #16 16-17 Nov 2013: lava fountains

As expected, another paroxysmal eruption took place at the New SE crater over night. This marks the 16th such event in 2013. The main phase lasted about 5 hours between midnight and shortly before dawn. It consisted of violent pulsating lava fountains reaching 300-600 m height, thundering explosions of giant magma bubbles that ejected large glowing, liquid spatter to hundreds of meters distance in radial directions, and the effusion of several lava flows. The first lava flow was erupted from the fissure vent between the old and new SE crater and traveled to the south as far as the former Torre del Filosofo area, on top of the much larger flow from last week (11 Nov). A second flow was active from the eastern fissure of the cone, traveled east and bent NE at the 2008 vents and a few 100 m or so into Valle del Bov. The third flow was erupted to the NE towards the Valle del Leone, similar as during the previous paroxysm. In comparison, lava flow output was much less than during the past eruptive phase 6 days ago. The New SE crater continued to produce frequent strombolian explosions in the morning afterwards, again, in much the same way as at the end of the previous paroxysm. etna j03443
