Sporadic small ash emissions have reappeared from the New SE crater during the past days, although weather conditions did not often allow direct observation. Since about 4 days ago, tremor has been showing a slowly rising trend, although it is still at low levels.

After a phase of complete quiet since 13 September, weak ash emissions occurred again at the New SE crater during the night 16-17 Sep, accompanied by a slight rise of tremor. This activity ceased again during the early hours of today. ...more

A small ash emission was reported to have occurred yesterday morning from the New SE crater. This would likely be the first eruptive activity since the spectacular series of paroxysms in the first months of the year. ...more

A cluster of earthquakes of magnitudes 2-3 occurred yesterday under the eastern flank near Sant Alfio, at depths around 7-8 km.

Location of recent quakes under Etna volcano
A small swarm of earthquakes has occurred yesterday under the volcano's eastern flank near the town of Milo. INGV Catania has recorded several quakes around magnitude 0.7-1.3 at depths between 5-9 km.

During a visit to the summit craters today, we could observe a new hot fumarole in the western pit of the Bocca Nuova, increased bluish degassing from a vent in the saddle between the old and new SE crater and hear deep-seated explosions inside the NE crater. ...more

A swarm of shallow (3-6 km depth) earthquakes including several felt ones (magnitudes 2.9-3.5) occurred yesterday and today under the SE flank near Zafferana town. So far, no other unusual signs of activity have been reported, but the swarm could indicate something in the making, and the monitoring agency INGV is certainly following these events closely.
