The eruption picked up again this morning after a pause of visible activity since yesterday afternoon. A new vent opened near the rim, but outside of the main crater, producing a small lava fountain and lava flow, observers noticed on webcam recordings.
According to Bjarki Kaldalón Friis from the Icelandic Meteorological Office interviewed by mbl.is, it is too early to say whether the new vent will replace the existing main crater over time or whether it should essentially be seen just a part of the same feature, i.e. a small side-vent from the upper conduit feeding the main crater.
