It is one of the most active volcanoes in Kamchatka. The eruption followed a massive flank failure (similar to Mt. St. Helens eruption in 1980) which removed a 0.5 sq km sector of the volcano.

A strong explosion has sent ash to 10km (initially mistaken to be from neighbouring Klyuchevskoy by Tokyo VAAC). KVERT raised the Aviation Colour Code to Red. This is the first activity since the large explosion in December 2017. --- Source: - KVERT: Report for this event.
