A 7.0 earthquake hit off the coast of the Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, last night, 20 March 2021, at 6:09 pm local time. The quake occurred 16 km northeast of the city of Ishinomaki and hit at a depth of 54 km. Ishinomaki was one of the most affected cities during the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami.
Our monitoring service received multiple user reports describing moderate to strong shaking. Multiple users also reported to have felt about 20 seconds of shaking. The quake was felt at up to 350 km radius distance from the epicenter. It reached the cities of Tokyo and Yokohama where a great number of user reports also came from. Japan's Meteorological Agency reported an intensity of 5 for the Miyagi Prefecture, and an intensity of 3 for the cities of Tokyo and Yokohama.

A tsunami warning was issued following the 7.0 quake. NHK reported waves of up to 1 meter that hit land shortly after the quake. Due to this warning, the town of Watari in the Miyagi Prefecture issued evacuation orders for about 7,000 of their residents. This warning was downgraded to a “tsunami forecast” of slight changes in sea level along the Japan eastern coast by 7:30 pm local time. The US tsunami warning system stated that there was no threat of tsunami from the earthquake.
The Miyagi Prefecture fire department reported no significant damage. According to the Japan Times, no abnormalities were detected from the nuclear reactors in the eastern and northeastern parts of the country. There have also been at least 2 reported injuries. Meanwhile, 200 homes in Kurihara in the prefecture were without electricity according to the NHK. Rail line services were also halted including the Tohoku Shinkansen (bullet train).

This quake came just a few days after the region marked the 10th year anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku quake and tsunami, the Japan Times noted. Over a month prior to this quake, a strong quake also hit off the neighboring Fukushima Prefecture. Seismologists believed that the February 2021 quake was an aftershock of the 2011 megaquake.
Japan is on the Pacific Rim of Fire, a large region where most of the volcanic and seismic activities in the world occur. This region sits along the rim of the Pacific Plate which undergoes subduction under the other surrounding plates.

We truly love working to bring you the latest volcano and earthquake data from around the world. Maintaining our website and our free apps does require, however, considerable time and resources.
We need financing to increase hard- and software capacity as well as support our editor team. We're aiming to achieve uninterrupted service wherever an earthquake or volcano eruption unfolds, and your donations can make it happen! Every donation will be highly appreciated. If you find the information useful and would like to support our team in integrating further features, write great content, and in upgrading our soft- and hardware, please make a donation (PayPal or Online credit card payment).

Planned features:
  • Weather reports
  • Tsunami alerts
  • Design upgrades
  • Faster responsiveness
Thanks to your past donations, these features have been added recently:
  • Earthquake archive from 1900 onwards
  • Additional seismic data sources
  • Improved content in English
