Earthquake hits Sulawesi, damages many buildings
A light to moderate, but shallow earthquake of magnitude 4.7 hit the northwestern part of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi 80 km north of Mamuju town in the Sulawesi Barat (West Sulawesi) province. Although it was a comparably small quake, it caused significant damage and injured many people. The earthquake was felt widely over large parts of the island.
The quake's epicenter was near the coast in the Budong-Budong district, where strong shaking was felt, causing many residents to flee their homes in panic. According to local news reports, several buildings in areas close to the quake suffered damage with collapsing walls that injured people.
