A magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported only 12 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Saturday 14 November 2020 at 1.33 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. Weak shaking might have been felt in Sigli (pop. 17,500) located 27 km from the epicenter, Banda Aceh (pop. 250,800) 53 km away, Sabang (pop. 24,500) 65 km away, Reuleuet (pop. 40,400) 66 km away, and Bireun (pop. 25,800) 107 km away.
