Just 20 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, Mexico. The tremor was recorded early morning on Sunday 28 February 2021 at 6:19 am local time, at a shallow depth of 17 km below the surface.
The event was filed by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Concepcion Bamba (pop. 310) located 30 km from the epicenter, El Carrizal (pop. 1,300) 35 km away, and El Morro (pop. 2,600) 38 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Salina Cruz (pop. 76,600) located 46 km from the epicenter, Santiago Astata (pop. 2,200) 49 km away, Colonia Juarez (pop. 2,800) 56 km away, San Mateo del Mar (pop. 5,700) 58 km away, Santo Domingo Tehuantepec (pop. 42,100) 62 km away, and San Blas Atempa (pop. 12,000) 63 km away.
