An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred only 14 minutes ago 93 km northwest of Arequipa, Peru, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 20 km beneath the epicenter near Arequipa, Provincia de Arequipa, Peru, around noon on Saturday 6 March 2021 at 12:19 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Huambo (pop. 530) located 4 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lluta (pop. 6,000) located 30 km from the epicenter, Chivay (pop. 4,500) 53 km away, and El Pedregal (pop. 20,100) 69 km away.
