Les éruptions depuis 1950 (f: flanc / s: activité sommitale): 1950-51(f), 1952(s), 1953(s?), 1955-64(s), 1966-1970(s), 1966(f), 1971(f), 1971-1980(s), 1974(f), 1978(f), 1979(f), 1980-81(s), 1981 (f), 1983(f), 1984(s), 1985(f), 1986(s), 1987(f), 1987(s), 1989(f), 1989-1991(s), 1991-93(f), 1995-2001(s), 2001(f), 2002(s), 2002-03(f), 2004-2005 (f),2006(s),2007(s),2008-9(f)

Etna volcano (Sicily): 17th paroxysmal eruption of the New SE crater in progress

The latest paroxysm (nr 17 in 2013) at the New SE crater of Mt Etna occurred this morning, just less than one week after the previous one last weekend.
First signs of activity had become evident last evening with weak occasional explosions at the New SE crater. The strombolian activity increased quickly starting from about 10:30 local time and merged into violent lava fountains. The eruption today was much faster than the previous ones, but the peak phase of lava fountaining, which only lasted about one hour, was particularly intense. It produced tall fountains and a large ash plume of about 6 km height that drifted to the NE (towards Taormina) where heavy ash fall occurred.

In addition, Etna continues to produce wonderful steam rings.

You can follow the activity live at webcams.volcanodiscovery.com (or if you are on a small mobile display, at the mobile optimized version).

The awaited new paroxysm of Etna's NEW SE crater (#15 in 2013) started last night and is still in full progress. Unfortunately, a snow storm above the summit area prevents detailed observations, but judging from the seismic signal, this eruption is unusually long and intense (and still growing at the time of updating). Ash fall has been reported from villages to the E/NE (Zafferana, Milo etc), where the plume is carried to by strong Libeccio winds. [details]
