En activité quasi permanente ; certaines grandes éruptions historiques telles que : en 122 BC (éruption explosive du sommet), AD 1669 (éruption sur le flanc sud dévastatrice), 1787 (l'une des plus spectaculaires éruptions au sommet enregistrée - fontaines de lave, semble-t-il, jusqu'à 3000 m de haut).

Style éruptif tipique:
Effusive (coulée de lave et fontaine de lave) et explosive avec des éruptions modérées stromboliennes et parfois phréatomagmatiques. Les deux types d’activités éruptives ont lieu fréquemment au sommet et sur ses flancs. Ses éruptions latérales au niveau des flancs, semblent se regrouper sur des laps de temps d’environs quelques dizaines d’années
