En activité quasi permanente ; certaines grandes éruptions historiques telles que : en 122 BC (éruption explosive du sommet), AD 1669 (éruption sur le flanc sud dévastatrice), 1787 (l'une des plus spectaculaires éruptions au sommet enregistrée - fontaines de lave, semble-t-il, jusqu'à 3000 m de haut).

Style éruptif tipique:
Effusive (coulée de lave et fontaine de lave) et explosive avec des éruptions modérées stromboliennes et parfois phréatomagmatiques. Les deux types d’activités éruptives ont lieu fréquemment au sommet et sur ses flancs. Ses éruptions latérales au niveau des flancs, semblent se regrouper sur des laps de temps d’environs quelques dizaines d’années

Italian scientists have analyzed satellite data from the Italian Cosmo-SkyMed and the European Sentinel satellites, which passed over Etna both before and after the short, but intense flank eruption that began on 24 December 2018 and the seismic crisis that accompanied this event and culminated in the 4.8 magnitude early on 26 Dec with an epicenter near the villages Viagrande, Trecastagni and Fleri on the southeastern side of Etna. ...
