A new eruption has been occurring at the remote volcano. It probably started in mid June and seems to be still going on.
MODIS thermal signal from Heard Island volcano (MIROVA)
During the past 4 months, a significant heat signal has been present and coming from the summit area of Mawson Peak, the historically active cone which forms the summit of Heard Island.
In addition, weak steam (and ash?) plumes can be sometimes seen on (very rare) clear weather satellite imagery.
The exact nature of the eruptive activity is impossible to determine, but likely involves the presence of a small lava lake and or strombolian activity in the summit craters.
