Hekla volcano (Iceland): news & activity updates

Hekla volcano (Iceland): earthquake swarm

lundi avril 14, 2014 17:34 | AUTEUR : T

Earthquakes in southern Iceland during the past 48 hours
Earthquakes in southern Iceland during the past 48 hours
A shallow (around 8 km depth) earthquake swarm including two quakes at 2.7 and 2.9 magnitude has started in an area 12 km to the south of Hekla volcano.
Latest GPS measurements suggest a slight trend of inflation is occurring as well, which could be related to magma intrusion into shallow magma chambers.
We don't know whether these earthquakes are volcanic in origin or could be a precursor to a new eruption in a near future (probably not). On the other hand, since one is being considered "due" by many scientists, it would not be very surprising either.

Another earthquake swarm has been occurring off the SW tip of Iceland on the Reykjanes ridge, the submarine continuation of the active western rift zone.

lundi, juil. 01, 2013
The trend of rapid inflation that started in April has not continued, but was partly reverted and significant deformation has stopped for now. Nothing suggests for now that an eruption is imminent, but Hekla is known for providing close to no (seismic) warning before eruptions. [details]
GPS-measured deformation of HEKR station (Univ. Iceland), north of the volcano
mardi, avril 30, 2013
The famous Icelandic volcano is showing further signs that indicate an eruption could occur in a near future. Significant rapid inflation, concentrated in the northern part of the volcano, has been detected since early April and likely represents accumulation of rising magma underneath. ... [details]

The Icelandic Meteorological Office has informed authorities about unusual seismicity at Hekla volcano, which could be a precursor to a new eruption, and increased the volcanic alert level to yellow. Monitoring of the volcano will be intensified, as Hekla is not only one of the most active, but also one of the potentially most hazardous volcanoes of the country. The last eruption was in March 2000. On average, the volcano has been erupting about every 10 years, and it would statistically seen be due for a new one. ... [details]
